Late this afternoon, the Hampshire Grand Jury returned an indictment charging Cara L. Rintala, age 45, with the March 29, 2010 murder of Annamarie Rintala, in the home they formerly shared at 18 Barton Street in Granby. At the request of the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, the Superior Court issued an arrest warrant for Rintala, who was taken into custody shortly before 5 p.m. by the Narragansett Police Department in Narragansett, Rhode Island, where Rintala has resided for approximately the last year. Rintala was transported to the Narragansett Police Department where she was booked and charged as being a fugitive from justice, and will remain held without bail until her appearance tomorrow morning in the Washington County Courthouse in South Kingstown, Rhode Island. If Rintala waives extradition, she could be returned to the Hampshire Superior Court as early as tomorrow afternoon for her arraignment. Granby Police responded to 18 Barton St. on the evening of March 29, 2010, after a neighbor of the Rintalas’ placed a 911 call. First responders discovered Annamarie Rintala’s lifeless body in the basement, with obvious signs of trauma. Her homicide was investigated by the Massachusetts State Police Detectives Unit assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, led by lead case officer Jamie Magarian, and the Granby Police Department, led by case officer Sergeant Mark Smith. Both were present as Rintala was taken into custody by several members of the Narragansett Police Department, including Detective Sergeant Matthew Sutton, Detective Sean Klaboe and Detective Ryan Prest. The prosecution of Rintala’s case will be headed by First Assistant District Attorney Steven E. Gagne. Attorney David P. Hoose is expected to enter his appearance on behalf of Rintala at her arraignment. “Today’s indictment and arrest of Cara Rintala for the March 29, 2010 murder of Annamarie (Cochrane) Rintala represents the culmination of an exhaustive and persistent investigation by the Massachusetts State Police Detectives Unit assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office in collaboration with the Granby Police Department," Northwestern District Attorney David E. Sullivan said. "We hope that today’s developments bring some small degree of solace to the Cochrane family, who have remained steadfast in their patient pursuit of justice.” Additional information may be available during or following Rintala’s arraignment.
