Student and professional artists to create art for Children’s Advocacy Center
Student artists, families and friends are invited to a kick-off celebration of "Art Wide Open," Sunday, Sept. 18, from noon until 8 p.m. at the Leverett Crafts & Arts Market, 13 Montague Road in Leverett Center.
“Art Wide Open” is an opportunity for high school students to create art to be displayed at the Northwestern DA's Children's Advocacy Center, a child-friendly home in Northampton where children suspected of being physically and/or sexually abused are medically examined and interviewed in a non-threatening environment.
Child abuse is one of the most prevalent crimes in the Northwestern District, and crimes against children have some of the most damaging and far-reaching effects.
In “Art Wide Open,” student artists will be paired with and mentored by skilled artists from the area with the goal of creating art to make the Children’s Advocacy Center even more comforting, safe and inclusive for children who are suspected of being abused..
Kathryn Brown, an accomplished children's book illustrator; Daniel Ochoa, a professional ceramic artist and educator; and Colee Asia, a professional painter and art exhibitor will direct the project, collaborating with high school students over the coming few months to complete the art exhibit for the CAC.
Students can sign up to participate at the kick-off celebration on Sunday, Sept. 18 from noon until 8 p.m. There will be live music, crafts, an open microphone, food and art for sale.
