15th Annual Child Abuse Awareness Month Kick-Off Breakfast, April 3 at Log Cabin
The 15th Annual Child Abuse Awareness Month Kick-off Breakfast to benefit the Northwestern Children’s Advocacy Project, is this Thursday morning, April 3, at the Log Cabin, 500 Easthampton Road in Holyoke.
Jeffrey Suriano, father of the victim in the 2012 trial that resulted in the conviction on child rape charges of former theater director David Fried Oppenheim, will be the keynote speaker
Irene Woods, a social worker with the Department of Children and Families, and Hampshire County Sheriff Robert J. Garvey will be recognized with awards.
The Northwestern Children Advocacy Project is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit established in 2006 to put best practices into action to help victims of child abuse. It administers a Children’s Advocacy Center in Northampton and a new one that will open in Greenfield.
The Northampton CAC is a welcoming, child-friendly location where children who may be victims of physical and sexual abuse, and their families, can receive many of the services they need during the criminal investigative process, all under one roof. The trustees of Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School and Cooley Dickinson Hospital partnered with the Northwestern Children's Advocacy Project to provide a house equipped with a medical suite.
At the CAC, children who are suspected of being the victims of physical and sexual abuse may be interviewed in a coordinated interview process, outside of a police station, to reduce the number of times a child victim has to speak with investigators. The child may be medically examined at the CAC by trained medical providers outside of a hospital Emergency Room to minimize the trauma he or she experiences. Referrals for follow-up medical and mental health services are also available.
